Vaginal Dryness During Menopause
Vaginal dryness during menopause is a common yet sometimes overlooked symptom that can significantly affect a woman's quality of life. It’s known to affect more than one in two women after menopause.
This symptom may include dryness, as well as itching and irritation, and can cause discomfort and affect intimate relationships. Vaginal dryness is linked with thinning, drying or inflammation of the vaginal lining and tissues.
Vaginal dryness is part of the menopause transition and is linked to lower levels of oestrogen.

What causes these
changes in the vagina?
Oestrogen plays an important role in maintaining vaginal health by keeping the vaginal tissues elastic, thick, and lubricated.
As oestrogen levels decline during peri- and postmenopause, vaginal tissues can become thinner, less elastic, and drier, and may lead to genitourinary symptoms (vaginal and urinary tract symptoms) of menopause.
What Could Vaginal Atrophy Mean for Me?
Pain Or Discomfort
Changes to vaginal tissues (such as thinning and drying) can cause pain or discomfort during sex. Without enough lubrication and with reduced elasticity, friction during intercourse can lead to soreness, irritation, and even minor skin tears.

Menopause and Vaginal Itching
As vaginal tissues becomes more fragile and less protected, women may experience burning or itching sensations. The decrease in natural lubrication and the thinning of the lining can make the area more susceptible to irritation from everyday activities and even the use of hygiene products.
Can Vaginal Atrophy be Reversed?
Changes in vaginal tissue, while not entirely reversible, can be effectively treated and managed to relieve discomfort. It is important to discuss this with your doctor who will exclude other causes of genital symptoms, and may recommend other therapies, including other vaginal moisturisers and lubricants can help restore some of the lost elasticity, thickness, and lubrication.

Moisturisers
Vaginal moisturisers and lubricants can provide significant relief from vaginal dryness and discomfort.
Moisturisers work by hydrating the vaginal tissues, helping to restore natural moisture levels and maintain a healthy environment.
Lubricants, on the other hand, reduce friction during sexual activity, relieving any soreness or discomfort.
